Home Monthly Trip - Dive Santa Catalina Island In Avalon's Underwater Park

Santa Catalina is southern California’s most readily accessible island located 20 miles offshore – across the Catalina Channel.  Avalon’s Underwater Park off Casino Point offers visitors numerous aquatic options such as rocky reef areas, next to thick amber kelp forests that provide beautiful shadowy areas on sunny days and wrecks, including an historic recreation of a Greek wreck and actual wrecks.

Depart on the 6:15am on Saturday on the Catalina Express from DOWNTOWN CATALINA LANDING IN LONG BEACH TERMINAL – plan on arriving by 5:15am to check in, drop off gear and park your vehicle. Return to LONG BEACH will be on the 6:00pm Catalina Express out of Avalon, arriving at the terminal at approx. 7:00pm Saturday.  Actual return time may vary depending on availability.

The Long Beach Downtown Catalina Landing terminal is reached by taking the 405 (north or south) and exiting at the 710, South to Long Beach.  Stay to the left, follow signs to downtown and exit Golden Shore.  Turn right at stop sign, follow around to the terminal on the right.  Parking is located in the parking structure on the left is $14 per day.

Avalon’s Underwater Park is off Casino Point.  Depth can vary from 20 to 90 feet and accommodate novice to intermediate level divers.  The Park is roped off from boat traffic for a protected place dedicated to divers.  Larger fish tend to congregate here; divers can easily approach large bass, sheephead, lobster and bat rays plus the ever present and unforgettable - garibaldi.  The location has been greatly enhanced by the addition of a wide stairway leading from the parking lot into the water; with a ledge submerged to make entry and exit safer and easier.
